I mention in the Underpass episode about Montgomery Highway, today's Independence Drive, being a sleepy country road when the school was built. As the over-the-mountain communities grew the need to keep the students safe was a key driver for the underpass. In this 1927 photo of the west side of Shades Cahaba, the view from the Pig, you will notice the dirt road in the foreground. THIS, was Montgomery Highway.
