On this episode of the Shades Cahaba Oral History Project, I interview alumnus Don Harbor who attended elementary school at Shades Cahaba starting in 1948 in the second grade. He was in the last 8th-grade class at Shades Cahaba before they moved that grade to Homewood Junior High School. He grew up on Poinciana Drive and got to watch the building of Shades Valley High School where he eventually attended high school.
Don worked with my father at Luckie & Forney Advertising here in Birmingham after he graduated college. He moved on to a successful career in advertising which included a stop in Virginia. He eventually moved back to Birmingham and transitioned to a career as a commercial photographer which is where I met Don. I have enjoyed working with Don professionally but I most enjoy sitting around and listening to his stories.
Shades Cahaba School is located in Homewood, Alabama and celebrates its 100th Anniversary in 2020. It is still an active elementary school.
In the photo, Don is second from the right.
